Performance in the Studio

Summary
My contribution to this research network is to arrive at a model for representing the creative process in the recording studio, from conception to production, focusing on the pivotal relationship between the producer and singer-songwriter. Analysing their conversations, together with discourses between other participants in the recording session and in interview, I explore the ways that metaphorical language and visual representations contribute to decision-making at different stages of the creative process. Examining the relationship between talk and play reveals how the musicians interact and create a mutual orientation to each other while also showing how the ‘text’ is defined and re-defined.
